Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo
Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back is a very easy read. I read it in just over two hours over two days.
It’s the story of 3-year old Colton Burpo, who after suffering a ruptured appendix, tells his parents about his trip to Heaven and meeting his great-grandfather, his miscarried sister, and Jesus. His stories tell facts about people and things that he’s never been told about such as how his sister in Heaven didn’t have a name. His father shares that they never named the miscarried child because they didn’t know whether she had been a boy or a girl.
The full story takes months to come out because Colton shared information once in a while and his parents didn’t press him for details. I was impressed that they didn’t try to put words in his mouth, such as giving him the word for “sash”, so they didn’t try to help him tell a story that wasn’t accurate. Colton tells his parents that he’s seen Satan, but shuts down when asked to tell about him. He reveals that all of the pictures he’s seen of Jesus aren’t right, until he sees a picture done by a little girl, who’s also been to Heaven.
I highly recommend reading this book. You can read it before or after the movie. I believe that the book is much more comprehensive and really goes into the story much more deeply. This book is an encouragement to those questioning whether there is a Heaven. It encourages those who’ve lost a child and wonder whether their child is safe. Colton also witnesses with his child-like faith and advises the reader that they need to believe in Jesus; otherwise they won’t get to Heaven.
