Recent events in the world, especially the political world aside, this book makes it abundantly clear that if we had followed the money early and not believed the narratives of the politicians, the nightly news programs, and so on what we see today could have been entirely avoidable. Be that as it may, Katherine Stewart’s thoroughly documented, and detailed history and analysis of the players, foundations, and policy makers that have created what we see in America, and around the world today offer a jaw-dropping insider’s view of how we have arrived where we are, where we could be going or, possibly, how we can avoid a fate that was clearly foreseeable.
Not many who are sycophants to the current Trump Administration will appreciate the insights that the author has brought to this highly engrossing and readable book. Filled with her personal experiences and interviews with those whose money back organizations that might be well known to many of us such as The Heritage Foundation, The Claremont Institute, Hillsdale College, and The Federalist Society, Stewart goes into great detail how these organizations and many other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with their wealthy, billionaire backers have changed the political and cultural landscape in the past 10 to 20 years.
She has a great advantage in interviews as a member of the press corps with The New Yorker magazine, and New York Times especially, and her credentials and expertise in the area of Christian Nationalism is recognized with other highly regarded best-sellers in this arena such as The Power Worshippers, and The Good News Club.
This book is broken down into three sections, with a conclusion and call to action. Section One is, as the title suggests, Money. Where it comes from, the history of how it has been used to espouse conservative causes, and the culture wars, particularly where it influences education at every level. Section two, the Lies section, details the key players and how they use the money, resources, and narrative tools of the media to create a permanent state of crisis and a need to smash the Administrative (some might call it Deep) State. Starting to sound familiar? Finally, the third section takes a deep dive into the current state of affairs in the world of Christian Nationalism, not only here in America but in Europe.
The Conclusion provides a roadmap—I would say a necessary thing now—with hope for a future void of sycophants to one person under MAGA, with hateful rhetoric that is beholden to someone else footing the bill. It is a roadmap that protects our Constitutional Republic, while focusing on the sources of division with a way to eliminate those sources, mainly economic. Moms for Liberty, and other groups that appear to espouse the rights of the individual against their government are really groups backed by monied oligarchs with an alternative agenda designed to neutralize dissent.
And herein lies the problem. In order for the United States to flourish, all voices must be heard and not neutralized or have a media controlled narrative attached to it, and that is what Katherine Stewart does with this book. Every chapter of Money, Lies, and God is exceptionally well documented and the evidence exposed is beyond narrative debate.
It is irrefutable fact. I highly recommend this book for a current picture of how things got to be this bad so quickly. It will definitely take your blinders off.
